How to choose an accounting firm

  • Published, workload-based fees are easier to budget than a vague package.
  • Is the auditor's fee separate? Bookkeeping, audit arrangement and the audit itself are three different fees and should be itemised.
  • Deadline reminders: tax returns, employer's returns and annual returns all carry penalties when late.
  • Language and channel: overseas owners do best with a team that works in English and on WhatsApp.
  • One team for secretary and address too keeps your records consistent.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an accounting firm and an auditor?

An accounting firm keeps the books, prepares the accounts and handles tax-related work. The statutory audit must be carried out by an independent auditor, who signs the audit report. BizAion does the bookkeeping and arranges and coordinates the audit; the auditor quotes the audit fee separately.

How much does bookkeeping cost for a small company?

BizAion charges by yearly bank transactions: HK$1,000 a year for 1–50, HK$2,800 for 51–100, and from HK$8,800 above 250. Audit arrangement starts at HK$6,000 for turnover up to HK$1 million. Government and auditor fees are extra.

Does a company with no business still need accounts and an audit?

Yes. Every Hong Kong company needs an annual audit unless it has been declared dormant under the Companies Ordinance. A dormant company still renews its business registration and reports changes of directors or secretary. See our dormant company guide.

What documents do you need?

Usually company bank statements, sales and purchase invoices, receipts, payroll and MPF records, and last year's financial statements if there are any. We send you a checklist with your quote.

Can we work in English?

Yes. We work in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, and many overseas clients keep in touch with us on WhatsApp.
